IN THIS COURSE

De monstris - Monsters Through the Ages

This fully immersive Latin course offers guided readings of Latin texts—ancient, medieval, or modern—tailored to an intermediate level (and potentially to “advanced beginners” with a strong linguistic background). Each session will feature a structured reading followed by a lively discussion in Latin. You will be encouraged to ask questions, share observations, and engage with the themes of the texts, all centered around a fascinating topic: monsters.

Each week will focus on a different monster, explored through one or more Latin texts from classical, medieval, or modern sources. If you wish, you will also have the opportunity to give a short presentation to the class. Along the way, you will encounter werewolves, vampires, bloodthirsty boars, and, of course, one or two cyclopes.

Prerequisites:

  1. At least one full year of Latin (ability to understand simple sentences, knowledge of basic vocabulary, and regular verb conjugations) or

  2. Having read approximately two-thirds of Familia Romana.
